Is there any way to prevent dolphins from stealing drops while adventuring in the ocean?

Dolphins don't actually steal drops.

They take an item that *would not* have dropped because of the pressure penalties. So the only way to get rid of them is to pile on +item and +diver equipment and buffs until it all cancels out.

It's probably cheaper just to let them "steal" and then spend a sand dollar to get a guarantee.

Huh, I did not know that. Well, that makes me feel better in as much as I am still fighting the penalties just like I was before there were dolphins. Thank you.

Yup. Amuses me that someone just asked on the forums today about the other equivalent effect, that comes from the crimbo pressie or its joke familiar equipment. So you can actually have two messages saying items could've dropped but didn't, neither of which actually mean anything negative :).

Thus, the way to prevent dolphins from stealing stuff: increase your item drop so the items are guaranteed. (Not actually a good idea, if even possible.)

Not a good idea? Why do you say that?

"Not a good idea" in the sense that it would be stupidly expensive to make all items in the sea guaranteed, given that many of them are somewhat low-percentage drops, plus having to counter the intrinsic minus to item drop effects in the sea... thus, I say, having +item in the sea is a good idea, but trying to get all the way to everything dropping guaranteed, not such a great one.

Ah, I see what you mean. I reached level 30 finally in my run and wondered if I should try to push to accomplish more in the sea or not (I only have 3 sand dollars... that boot is a million miles away).

I presume you know about the dolphin whistles -- when they pick up something you want, you use the dolphin whistle to get it back. When you use the whistle, you go into combat with the dolphin. It's a relatively easy kill, and you get the item back.

Yep, I know about that, but apparently you can only use a whistle once a day?

Nope. You can use multiple whistles. However, there is a "reset" between whistles of a few turns. I only go after things that are harder to get or I really need, in case a dolphin steals a rare while I'm waiting. You don't have to go after the dolphin immediately, but if you run into another dolphin before using a whistle, the previously stolen item is lost.

I wondered about this... I need to find out how many turns of waiting are required.

Thank you.
