Question about clans, internet browsers
4th-Aug-2009 03:29 pm
Death, death, Niel Gaiman
Are clans necessary? I know you can finish the game without them, but am I missing things by not joining a clan? I'm fairly new to the game, a level 15 Turtle Tamer and a level 14 Disco Bandit, and haven't ever ascended, if that helps your decision.

On a completely different note, does anyone else use Firefox with KOL? It won't work at all for me, and hasn't for about a week. I've had to go back to Internet Explorer. ETA: It's not just white-screening me anymore, but now it acts as though I've double-clicked when I haven't. When I use something, it tells me I don't have the item. The effect for whatever items still happen. And this doesn't happen in Internet Explorer. ETA2: Crisis averted! The moral of the story is to get the latest version. *facepalm*

Hopefully the last ETA: Thank you everyone! I have finally decided to join up, and now I just have to figure out where.

I use firefox for everything. You may have to download some add ons, but I haven't had an issue with it.

Clans allow you to talk to people; and to go in and use the dungeons, as well as Clan Stash, halls, etc - some of those clans may add extra adventures, or have meat trees that allow you to get meat once a day.

Some clans are PvP heavy, others aren't.

You don't NEED a clan, but you might find it a lot of fun. I'd suggest trying one and you can always leave if you don't like it. :)

Depending on what the clan has in its rumpus room, you can get extra meet, extra adventures, and stuffed toys. In the clan I'm in, that can be up to 1500 extra meat a day, and an extra 8 adventures. The clan stash lets you build up karma by donating items you don't need to the stash. You can then use that karma to take things you need from the stash. None of the above is available in ronin or hardcore. The rumpus room also has a couch that can give a better return at some cases then sleeping in your camp site. If you want to adventure in the sewers or the slime tube, you access them from the clan basement.

As for Firefox, I'm using 3.0.13 on Windows7 with no problems. Now, I do know that some Greasemonkey scripts are broken thanks to the earthquake, and the resulting changes to the page code. Other than that, I've had no problems. Which version are you running, and what platform are you running it on?

Is it sad that the stuffed toy are what has most intrigued me?

I have version 3.0.11, maybe that's the problem.

I will give ou all of my stuffed toys if you want. I have quite a few. send me a message at this name on there.

The problem was that I didn't have the latest version. Thanks!

I'm in a clan, and it's a good one, but I rarely hang out in chat. I'm not a chat person in ANY context. However, clans can provide a lot of benefit - a good clan has a forum, is willing to help out newbies without being assholes about it, and if you're not in hardcore, you can dip into the clan stash and get that one item that the monsters just don't want to drop for you. (one or more; each clan has different rules about the clan stash) If you decide to go hardcore, your clan can be a font of information, speed run guides, and taunting. :D

finally, you can't do Hobopolis or the Slime Tube without a clan. Those rolled out just as I was starting my HC run, so I haven't played there yet, but they seem to be a good time.

I'm in KOL Addicts, and thoroughly enjoy them.

I use firefox exclusively, and haven't had a problem. Maybe disable your Greasemonkey (if you use it) and try again?

One of the reasons I was asking was because I'm not a chat person either. It seems quite obvious I need help, though. Hmm.

That didn't work, but thank you anyway.

Seconding Addicts! It's a great bunch.

I think that there is a significant portion of the playerbase that uses Firefox, if one judges by the number of Greasemonkey scripts players have written. :)

And clans... if you find a good one, it's much like home. Really though, I guess it would depend on what reasons you wanted to be in a clan for, since many are purposed around different things!

Are clans necessary?
If your aim is to complete the main series of quests and defeat the main foe then you can do this without a clan.
If your aim is to see and do everything then you need a clan, as there are some (currently two) clan-exclusive sets of adventures and items (currently one IotM clan item, and the various normal items available from the rumpus room).
If your aim is to meet and interact with people then a clan gives you a new chat channel, an in-game forum to discuss with people, and allows you to form a closer community.

Clans are completely superfluous to the game of "getting the main quest line and killing the main foe", so they are not "necessary" in the strictest terms, but I would recommend joining a clan (and the two main ways of doing so are to be awesome in chat and get invited, or scour the graffiti wall and/or the clan-invite KoL forum thread).

As for Firefox? It should absolutely usable, but you may have problems with add-ons, plugins etc. If you can explain the problems you're experiencing others may be able to help.

I suppose my aim would be to see and do everything. Thank you for breaking it down like that.

I've edited to explain my problems a little better, mostly as they've changed.

My thoughts on clams, since I feel like I just saw this post on the forums at one point or another.

- My clam is the shit, but we are kind of a closed circle. I don't use KoL chat, but I am idle'd in IRC any time my computer is on and connected to the internet, and we chat there.
- The clam dungeons, Hobopolis and the Slime Tube, are both pretty significantly awesome. Hobopolis introduced a ton of gear and skills that are untradeable but are useful, unique and powerful. Slime Tube did the same thing on a smaller, more easily repeated scale. If you're looking to explore all the content you can, clam dungeons, at the very least, are a must - unique mechanics, man! (You can also solo both of the clam dungeons, though you won't get any of the speed run rewards that take some work and planning. I rented a clam a few months ago for my friend and I to tag-team Hobopolis by ourselves. Best idea ever.) On top of all of that, there will be more in the future!
- The VIP Clan Key is similar to the dungeons in that it offers ever-expanding benefits. If you're in a big enough clam, I doubt you'll need to donate for the expensive Mr. Store items that end up in the VIP room, and you'll only need one Key to rock out in that great content.
- I loot my clam's stash constantly. We all help each other stay fed, drunk, and nose-stuffed-with-spleen in aftercore.
- Apparently there's some kind of clam warfare, but I don't even know what that means. It'll probably change with the PVP revamp coming up.

In short: are you missing out by not being in a clam? I say, very politely, yes. Yes, you are. The community aspect is negligible if you don't dwell in chat fairly regularly, but the content vectors are all - at the risk of sounding redundant and repetitive - unique, unique, unique.

It costs nothing, so why not join up with a big, friendly clan like KoL Addicts and just take a gander around, see if you like it, the people or the concept?
4th-Aug-2009 10:23 pm (UTC)
Thank you for that. It does sound like a good idea. Mostly I'm shy.
4th-Aug-2009 10:25 pm (UTC)
Don't be! You don't even have to say anything if you don't want - just come idle in chat, if you feel like talking about whatever is going on in /normal, go for it. If not, whatever!

Also, if you joing a larger clam like KoL Addicts, you won't be forced into being social, and you can reap the benefits (and donate to the benefits) without revealing yourself at all, if you just want to be left alone. Clams are not strictly a social medium, they're also legit gameplay tools.

(Also also, I know I pimp KoL Addicts somewhat heavily, but they were my first clam when I joined back in the day, and they are extremely helpful to the confused, shy, neurotic and obnoxious, which is exactly what I was at the time!)
4th-Aug-2009 10:35 pm (UTC)
Okay, that sounds good. I'll have to join a large one then. I was worried I would be expected to be social, and that would leave them disappointed.

Don't worry about it, I appreciate examples. And, if they accept the application, you got them a new member!
4th-Aug-2009 10:46 pm (UTC)
I had a long reply to this, but LJ seems to have eaten it. Sorry if you get two.

Most of my problem was being worried that they're a social thing, and I'm not good with social without facial expressions and tone. I applied to a small one with one account and a bigger one with the other, but from what you said, I'll probably like the bigger one.

Don't worry about the KOL Addicts thing, you may have gotten them a new member!

I just wanna say that I was also shy and whatnot when I joined KoLA and then after a while of watching chat, I started to recognize names and felt more comfortable piping up and everyone was really great. Folks are usually friendly (every now and then an asshat shows up) and they're always willing to cut you some slack if you stick your foot in your mouth or something.

Also, we have a streaming radio every night a couple hours before rollover. Anyone can listen to it, but you get playlist links in chat for requests and plus there's conversation about the show sometimes. It's one of my favorite things about the clan. :)

I'm really not sure what the other clans are like, because though I joined a few others before KoLA, but didn't really stay long. I forget what happened with KoLA to make me stick around, but it may have been something with their forums? which I never post to. But from what I can tell, most clans are going to be pretty great, if only because it's nice to have someone cheer for you when you finally defeat the NS in a Sauceror Bad Moon run ;)

ps: i'm bumblebea & bloody jacky in game.

All of that's great to hear. I'm just waiting for a response now.

I'm orange_prose and scummy_minus, myself.
