Things disappearing from inventory

It is our choices... by abrilliantly
So, I went to put on my Mutant Couture outfit to go trick or treating and discovered that it was gone. The hat, weapon, the pants, all of it. I checked my PvP records and haven't lost any parts of it there, I certainly didn't sell it, I haven't given my password to anyone. It's weird. And really sucks. I've messaged the PtB, but I'm curious if anyone else has had an experience like this.

Very strange. At least it won't be horribly expensive to replace.

Depends on your definition of horribly expensive. For me, that's a good chunk of my savings. :(

Been focusing on ascending rather than making money, then? If you let me know what you need and your game name, I think I can manage to deal with the matter :-)
7th-May-2009 12:19 pm (UTC)
Well, I'm still rather new. I've been there about a year and have ascended five times. I, er, figured out a trick for making a lot of meat, but only recently. And, wow, I just looked in the mall and that stuff has gotten cheap. I thought it was going to cost me hundreds of thousands.

And, oh...! That's incredibly kind, thank you so much! I'm worried I wouldn't be able to return the favour though. And I fiddled around, took some stuff out of my shop, untinkered a chitinous pod and now I'm fine. :)

I still don't know what happened. Really weird.

After a year, you're not all that new any more...

The prices of all Crimbo items dived right after Crimbo ended, so I wasn't offering a hugely generous favour that needed returning :-) Good to hear you managed to fix yourself up again, though.

It's not all that hard to make moderate amounts of meat without needing fancy equipment -- 100,000 a day ought to be achievable for most people I think and a lot higher if you have good equipment, skills and familiars. (And then there are windfalls like friends who stop playing and give away their stuff!)

I hope you don't mind me continuing the conversation, this is interesting. :)

I haven't really kept track of how much meat I make a day. Are there ways of making 100k simply through playing or would that involve using the mall too? Can, you give me any hints? :D My current strategy involves speculating on IotMs, which isn't particularly clever, I know.

7th-May-2009 01:10 pm (UTC)
Speculation on IotMs can be hugely profitable, though generally less so now than in the past. On the other hand, it's a risky business. I mostly suck at it, though I made a monster profit by buying a second snowcone tome way back when they were in the store and holding on to it for a couple of years.

If you take a leprechaun into the castle in the clouds and boost +meat and +items as best you can you can make a pretty decent per-turn income. A full weight leprechaun with its familiar item and Empathy from a buffbot is getting you something like 350 per monster to start with, and items from there autosell for decent amounts. You can get buffs like phat loot and polka of plenty very cheap from buffbots, plus whatever gear you have that boosts drops. Eat and drink decent things and you should be able to get 2-300 turns a day. If you have olfaction, sniff Goth Giants there.

Another option with olfaction is to focus on item drops and sniff bookbats (for tattered scraps) or very mad scientists (scrumptious reagents).

Averaging 1000 meat a turn from simple farming isn't really hard if you've got mid-range skills, equipment and familiars. 500 meat a turn ought to be do-able by most people, I think.

Awesome, thank you so much!

Also of note, <a href="http://forums.kingdomofloathing.com/vb/showthread.php?t=142094>this thread</a>. Much of it related to NPZR farming, and is thus now obsolete, but there's still a lot of discussion of general farming techniques as well. As far as farming goes, though, these days it's all about item farming: finding a niche, something people will buy that isn't heavily farmed at the moment, and farming there until too many people are, then going elsewhere. Anyway, be glad you did get it fixed - there <i>have</i> been (very) occasional reports of people having items disappear permanently. Glad you weren't one of them.

Did you double check Hagnk's and your DC? maybe even your store?
7th-May-2009 11:09 am (UTC)
I did. :( There were a couple of extras that I'd had on sale in my store, so I took those out. But not everything. It's just so weird.
7th-May-2009 11:17 am (UTC)
Oh, wait, what about your closet?

Whenever I think I've lost something, it always seems to be because I stuck it in my closet for safe-keeping and forgot about it.

Otherwise, I can't think of anything. :/ I hope the gear turns up for you.
7th-May-2009 02:47 pm (UTC)
If it's really not in your inventory, closet or Hagnk's and you didn't sell it or lose it in PvP, then I'd file a buy report.
7th-May-2009 09:06 pm (UTC)
A buy report? Can I look that up on the site?
8th-May-2009 12:15 am (UTC)
Typo. I meant "bug report."
7th-May-2009 09:01 pm (UTC)
You didn't accidentally untinker it into parts, did you? And by "you", I also mean Mafia.
7th-May-2009 09:06 pm (UTC)
I can't imagine doing that by accident. And if I had untinkered them, I would have been able to reassemble them using 'discoveries,' right?

And although I'm familiar with the term Mafia, I haven't looked into what it means in a kol context yet. I'm kind of a lone wolf player. ;)
7th-May-2009 09:11 pm (UTC)
I find mafia to be horrible, and can't understand its popularity. A large part of that is that I play the game for the art and the comedy. Mafia ruins all of that.

Anyway, bug report away. Just log into the game, and there will be a link on the bottom line of the quick links that says "report bug"
8th-May-2009 07:00 am (UTC)
...Mafia ruins all of that...

That's not correct. Or at least, not necessarily correct. Using Mafia's relay browser feature lets you see the game as normal while giving you access to all the handy Mafia stuff when you want it.
